A Hero Worth Visiting: The Story of Pigeon 2709

When you visit the Royal Signals Museum in Blandford, Dorset, you’ll encounter one of World War I’s most extraordinary acts of courage – Pigeon 2709, known as the “V.C. Pigeon.” On October 3rd, 1917, during the Battle of Passchendaele, this remarkable bird was shot while carrying a vital message, with the bullet shattering his leg and driving the message cylinder into his body. Despite his grievous injuries, he battled through 21 hours of mud, wind, and rain to deliver his mission-critical information before dying from his wounds.

Today, visitors can see this preserved hero whose sacrifice so moved the Western Front loftsmen that they christened him the “V.C. Pigeon.” His display serves as a powerful tribute to the 20,000 pigeons who served as “Winged Messengers” during WWI, offering visitors a unique opportunity to witness courage preserved in time and honor the animal heroes whose service saved countless human lives.
